Two months after the publication of the world ranking of the best ‘young’ universities (under fifty years old), Times Higher Education (THE) publishes the ranking of the best ‘small’ universities (with less than five thousand students), in which USI now ranks 14th (up 6 positions). A cross-analysis of the two rankings also shows that USI is eighth in the world among young and small universities.
These results reflect some of the characteristics that have always distinguished Università della Svizzera italiana and that meet students’ expectations: small classes and a faculty-student ratio (currently 1:9) that fosters interaction, a small campus and an idea geographical location, between the two large urban areas of Zurich and Milan.
The THE ranking of small universities is based on the main THE World University Rankings 2021, in which USI figures in the 251-300 range (out of 1527 universities reviewed). Universities that teach at least four disciplines and have fewer than 5,000 students are also considered. The average number of students at a university in the 2021 Rankings of the world’s best small universities is 3,197 (USI currently has 3,350) – by comparison, the average number of students at an institution in THE’s global ranking is 25,000.
